Canyon View Foundation

Frequently Asked Questions

Q. What is the Canyon View Foundation?

A.  The Canyon View Foundation is a non-profit organization that was established to provide the additional financial support necessary to expand the quality of education for all students at Canyon View Elementary School.

Q.  Does the Foundation have specific goals or areas that they will be focusing on?

A.  The Foundation will be setting its goals each year, based on input from parents, teachers, and staff.  It is important that parents, teachers, and Canyon View staff fill out the surveys sent out each year so that their voice will be heard!  In past years, for example, the Foundation has helped to fund (or purchase outright) Doc-U-Cams for each classroom, ALEKS mathematics program licenses and support staff, and a new running track.

Q.  Have any other schools in the district started a Foundation like this?

A.  Yes.  Many other schools in the Poway Unified School District have created Foundations as a means to supplement their schools’ educational budgets.   In fact, Canyon View was one of the last elementary schools in the district to form a foundation.  Foundations, including ours, have already had dramatic effects, achieving such goals as purchasing needed computer equipment and science equipment, funding staff positions for reading, and constructing a new track.

Q.  Why can’t we get the money from the district or through the lottery or something?

A.  Good question.  Most of us don’t realize that the lottery only contributes to roughly 2% of the school’s budget.  There isn’t that much money there to get.  Our schools rely principally on monies received from the state via their respective school districts based on state and district budgets.  Our purpose is to raise funds in addition to our budgeted funds to provide additional educational technology and educational services beyond those available using our budgeted funds.

Q.  What is the difference between the Foundation and PTA?

A.  Perhaps the most important difference is that fund-raising is not a primary function of the PTA, although out of necessity the PTA has risen to that task in recent years and has done a wonderful job of it.  Since the formation of the Foundation we have shifted much of this fund-raising burden from the PTA to the Foundation. The PTA and Foundation are working closely together, collaborating and supporting each other in the work that we all do for our school.

Q.  Does the PTA still do fundraising?

A.  Yes, the PTA will continue to do select fundraising activities (the fall gift wrap fundraiser, EScrip, and Family Dine Out nights) to fund specific year-to-year school programs like the music program with Mr. Lee.

Q.  Who is on the Board of Trustees?

A.  We are Canyon View parents, teachers, and administrators who have volunteered to serve on the Board.  Visit this link to see our current Foundation Board members and officers.
